Paisagem Cultural de Mateus: Vila Real

Paisagem Cultural de Mateus: Vila Real

Abstract

The urban growth of most Portuguese cities has been causing profound ruptures in the matrix and identity of spaces that once mediated the city and the countryside. The farms, casais and condensed villages that established strong relationships with the city center are no longer the dominant peri-urban landscape typology, to the detriment of their functional complementarity, sustainability and urban quality. Due to particular circumstances, Mateus in Vila Real is one of the few places where this process of humanization, which is so integral to Portuguese identity, remains authentic and legible, although fragile and under pressure. The harmony of the landscape mosaic over the wrinkled topography according to principles of ecological suitability, improved agrarian culture techniques and aesthetic enjoyment of the space in the manner of each era, are the result of a wise art of ordering the landscape, adding value, which is easily distinguished by its sublimation of its main secular attributes. The interpretation of Mateus' Cultural Landscape is based on a holistic and systemic reading, from the medieval genesis of the city to contemporary times; supported by unprecedented cartography, after surveying the built, mineral and vegetal, popular and erudite, production and recreation, intramural andextramural heritage, identifying patterns, discerning typologies, analyzing systems and their techniques.
