Abstract

The skin is the largest organ of the human body, possessing a multifunctional nature that provides integrity and identity to our organism. It facilitates exchanges with the environment while simultaneously ensuring protection against it; however, it is the first organ to exhibit the most visible signs of aging. Skin aging is a natural, biological, and multifactorial phenomenon that cannot be stopped, but it is possible to delay its manifestations. It occurs in all layers of the skin, primarily due to the progressive decline in their physiological functionality, leading to the degradation of their components. The skin is an important element of external beauty for people and is, therefore, the focus of various skincare treatments. Changes in the skin associated with chronological aging or photoaging, such as wrinkles, sagging, and pigmentation alterations, lead people to seek cosmetic treatments to improve the appearance of their skin. Understanding the complexity of the skin's structure and the functioning of the skin barrier, as well as the factors that contribute to its aging, will be key to recognizing and delaying its visible symptoms. Natural molecules are an important target in this field due to the belief among people that natural products are safer. As a result, natural molecules are increasingly becoming the first choice as cosmetic agents. Plants contain many substances that may be valuable in combating skin aging. Based on this, this monograph is a review of natural plant-derived extracts used in the cosmetics industry, and therefore, with added value to the pharmaceutical profession. This approach will help identify the most advantageous species in combating skin aging and their importance in a world that aims to be increasingly sustainable.
