Horticultura protegida em Portugal

Abstract

A horticultura protegida abrange o uso de cobertura de solo e das plantas, como a cobertura directa, tuneis, abrigos de rede e estufas, alterando as condições naturais para aumentar a produtividade e melhorar a qualidade dos produtos. A área de estufas, o meio mais eficaz de protecção, atingiu cerca de 3000 ha em 2020. Estima-se que em metade desta área se utilize algum sistema de cultivo sem solo, em substrato ou hidropónico, em estufas de estrutura em aço galvanizado cobertas com filme plástico, e raramente vidro ou plástico rígido. As principais culturas são hortícolas para consumo em fresco, ornamentais e mais recentemente os pequenos frutos, como a framboesa. A horticultura protegida, em particular em estufa, desenvolveu-se inicialmente em zonas hortícolas tradicionais e expandiu-se rapidamente a outras regiões aproveitando a evolução tecnológica nas estufas e factores locais como a proximidade dos mercados, a disponibilidade de água, custo da terra e a experiência dos produtores. Existe um largo potencial de desenvolvimento para a horticultura protegida, mas requer um planeamento cuidadoso para assegurar a sua sustentabilidade. Como principais condicionantes para a sustentabilidade destacam-se a disponibilidade de água, a poluição ambiental, a alteração da paisagem e a carência de mão-de-obra, o que exige um forte investimento na investigação, experimentação e disseminação do conhecimento, para apoio da actividade. Tanto as estufas de baixa como as de elevada tecnologia apresentam aspectos positivos e negativos, que têm de ser estudados e ponderados com rigor nas diferentes zonas do território.
