Abstract

Desde os tempos primitivos que o uso das plantas tem sido fulcral para a existência do Homem. Para além dos seus vários usos em diversos âmbitos como a alimentação, as plantas podem ser usadas como medicamento para a prevenção e tratamento de doenças. As isoflavonas são compostos cuja existência nas plantas já é conhecida há mais de cem anos, mas só atraiu a atenção da comunidade científica na década de 1940 devido a problemas de fertilidade observados em animais de pastoreio de campos de trevos vermelhos (Trifolium pratense L.). Estes metabolitos secundários polifenólicos são produzidos principalmente por membros da família Leguminosae. Diversos estudos revelam que o consumo de alimentos que contêm esta classe de compostos polifenólicos, reduz a incidência de algumas patologias hormono- dependentes tais como a osteoporose e doenças cardiovasculares, reduz a sintomatologia da menopausa e abranda o envelhecimento da pele. Esta capacidade protetora deve-se à similaridade que a isoflavona tem com os estrogénios endógenos (17β-estradiol, estriol, estrona). Esta monografia tem como objetivo fazer uma revisão de diversas plantas, tal como a soja (Glycine max. L.), o trevo vermelho (Trifolium pratense L.) e outras espécies vegetais, pois contêm fitoestrogénios que ao serem ingeridas na alimentação ou como suplementos alimentares pode ser benéfico para tratamento e/ou prevenção de determinadas patologias.
