Abstract

Sardinella maderensis e Sardinella aurita são espécies pelágicas amplamente distribuídas em zonas tropicais e subtropicais, do Oceano Atlântico, Índico e Mar Mediterrâneo. Estas fazem parte das principais espécies consumidas na África Ocidental, sendo que as maiores capturas ocorrem em três regiões bem marcadas; Mauritânia- Senegal, Gana - Costa do Marfim e Gabão - Angola. Na costa angolana encontra-se distribuídas ao longo de toda a costa e a sua pesca ocorre todo o ano. Nos últimos anos, cerca de 80% da biomassa estimada é constituída por Sardinella maderensis e apenas 5-10% corresponde a Sardinella aurita. Este recurso possui grande importância socia-económica, já que a oferta de alimentos provenientes desta espécie tem atingindo, nos últimos anos, níveis bastante elevados em Angola constituindo a maior fonte de proteína animal para a população. Este projecto de investigação foi concebido com o objectivo de contribuir para o conhecimento dos principais aspectos da biologia das duas espécies de sardinellas vivendo na costa angolana como parte do programa de Pequenos Pelágicos.
