Abstract

O retábulo, ponto de convergência do culto, assume-se como componente principal dos programas específicos da arquitectura de animação pós-tridentina dos espaços interiores dos templos. Este estudo incide sobre aqueles que estiveram assim sob a administração da Companhia de Jesus em África, tendo hoje em ambos os lados deste continente como expoentes, os exemplares subsistentes nas igrejas dos antigos Colégios de Luanda, na costa ocidental, e da Ilha de Moçambique, na costa oriental. Tanto em São Paulo da Assunção de Luanda como em São Sebastião de Moçambique ficam concluídos, na primeira metade do século XVII, estes templos dos jesuítas que se notabilizam pela preponderância da sua edificação face ao restante edificado. A primeira destas igrejas conserva hoje no seu interior três retábulos do início do século XVIII, sendo o da capela-mor um exemplar raro em pedraria, com embutidos policromos, proveniente de uma oficina de Lisboa, enquanto os retábulos das duas capelas colaterais são em alvenaria estucada e decalcam o figurino do primeiro. Quanto à segunda igreja, mantém por sua vez tanto o retábulo da capela-mor do segundo quartel do século XVIII, como um púlpito notável de meados do século XVII, sendo ambos em lavor indo-português de proveniência goesa.
