El circo oriental de Colonia Patricia

Abstract

The archaeological works held in the former Convent of San Pablo between 1992- 1999 documented a circus and a square that, together with the temple in Claudio Marcelo Street shaped an important architectural complex in Colonia Patricia whose closer parallel is the roman provincial forum from Tarraco. Chronologically the complex of Córdoba was designed during the reign of Claudius (Temple and Square), the northern steps of circus were built during the reign of Nero and the works probably finished during the reign of Domitianus. Finally, the Eastern Circus was destroyed by the end of the 2nd century AD. The new Western circus, located Southwards present-day Medina Azahara Avenue determined the location of the Imperial Palace of Cercadilla one century later.
