Roman funerary practices, highly ritualized — no matter how much this ritual evolved, these would vary according to region, or would not be reflected in the same way in terms of social class, intellectual level, or means —, did not have a unique eschatological conception, depending on the personal attitudes towards death, of everything that surrounded the funus, and the individual or familiar philosophical approach to the fact of death and the concept of beyond the grave. The four elements played an important role in this process, perhaps not in a conscious or rationalized way, but deeply linked to Rome as a culture; something that it is possible to derive from texts of the period — including epigraphy —, but also from material remains. This transversal and somewhat atypical vision is the one proposed in this research, which will try to elucidate the presence and role of the four elements in the Roman funus.
