Abstract

For this research we have selected the inaugural speeches of Presidents Barack Obama and Donald Trump and, using a multidisciplinary critical approach such as Critical Discourse Analysis, we have tried to explain the representations of the «others» and «us» from a linguistic and social perspective. The collection of these data is based on the approach of the triangle discourse, cognition, and society and for this purpose a methodology of our own elaboration is used. The most relevant conclusions could be identified in the vision of the «others» presented by the two candidates. For Obama, the «others» are the citizens who do not share the values of the country, while for Trump, the «others» are not only these, but also those who do not share his political ideas. On the other hand, by means of the macro-themes indicated, it has been possible to conclude that the speech offered by Barack Obama was designed in a strategic, orderly, and coherent manner, using more frequently terms associated with concord. The speech offered by Donald Trump lacks basic writing elements, is unstructured and uses a more violent vocabulary.
