The indiscriminate use of masculine gender in language to refer to people of any sex symbolises a social paradigm in which men are the measure of everything while women are the exception, a lower-ranking subgroup that remains hidden in the background. Non-sexist language strategies have been developed to counteract this. As a specialised field and due to its characteristics, institutional translation is ideal for the application of these strategies. We will try to define its favourable features while pointing out different non-sexist institutional translation techniques with proposals drawn from real texts that can show their adequacy.
