Abstract

La TAA empêche sinon gêne considérablement la production animale. Beaucoup d'études socio-économiques le démontrent clairement. Les disponibilités en viande et en lait par tête d'habitant tendent à diminuer sous les effets conjugués d'une mauvaise productivité, en raison de la TAA, et de la croissance démographique. De vastes superficies de la zone humide peuvent bénéficier d'élevages performants de bovins et de petits ruminants, sous réserve de lever rapidement la contrainte que constitue la TAA et de passer à l'intensification. Des scénarios prospectifs de la FAO ont évalué à 120 millions de têtes le nombre de bovins supplémentaires que pourrait héberger la totalité de l'aire actuellement occupée par les tsé-tsé dans les différentes zones zoogéographiques d'Afrique concernées. Ce nombre pourrait même être largement dépassé grâce à l'intégration de l'élevage à l'agriculture et à l'intensification. Il convient d'être prudent dans une politique d'augmentation numérique des cheptels, les écosystèmes pastoraux étant très fragiles.
