Abstract

Espa?a. Espa?a, Estado, nacionalismo vasco, siglo xx, autonom?a. ABSTRACT: The author of this study analyses the paradox that arises, as occurred during a great part of the history of Basque Nationalism, between the will to separate from the Spanish State and the non-viability of this desire in practice, as has been revealed at many historical junctures the integration of this political movement and its degree of intensity have always fluctuated according to two main factors: the predominance of some internal trends or others in nationalism itself and the possibility of obtaining autonomy for the Basque Country. In any case, at no time has this nationalism had a project ?for? Spain, whereas at certain stages it has defended a project ?against? Spain. The main object of this article is to find the key to explain these attitudes, which have marked the history of the Basque Country in the twentieth century. Key Words: Spain, State, Basque Nationalism, Twentieth Century, autonomy
