Abstract

En los ?ltimos a?os se ha producido en la historiograf?a un ?giro hacia la literatura ? que tiene dos aspectos. Por un lado, se est? prestando una creciente atenci?n a las fuentes literarias. Por otro, a partir de los a?os setenta destacados historiadores han escrito libros que, tanto por su estilo como por su tem?tica, est?n m?s pr?ximos a la literatura que cualquiera de las grandes obras hist?ricas de las d?cadas anteriores. Este segundo aspecto, que Lawrence Stone en un ya famoso art?culo de 1979 denomin? el ?retorno de la narrativa?, se ha producido esencialmente en el campo de la historia social, aunque tambi?n ha influido en la revalorizaci?n de la biograf?a por parte de los historiadores pol?ticos. Sin embargo, la historia pol?tica no hab?a abandonado nunca la exposici?n narrativa y por tanto el cambio se ha notado especialmente en la historia social, que adem?s ha sido la rama en la que m?s se ha centrado el debate te?rico y metodol?gico de las ?ltimas decadas. El giro literario o el retorno de la narrativa se ha debido a que, en el primer plano de la investigaci?n, el predominio de los historiadores sociales ?ocupados en analizar estructuras impersonales? ha sido disputado por los historiadores de las mentalidades, dedicados a rastrear ?ideales, valores, utillajes mentales y pautas de comportamiento social ?ntimo, cuanto m?s ?ntimo mejor?, por usar la pintoresca descripci?n de Stone. A su vez, este inter?s por las mentalidades, es decir, por los ?ideales, valores, utillajes mentales y pautas de comportamiento? es el que explica la revalorizaci?n de las fuentes literarias.
