Abstract

[EN] The Irritable Bowel Syndrome is one among the diseases of the gastrointestinal tract that affects almost everyone at some stage of their lives, not showing at this moment any metabolic, estructural change of the involved visceras, manifested by changes in bowel function and abdominal pain. The aim of this?study was to investigate the use of physiotherapists resources in the treatment of patients with IBS. We selected 24 patients with IBS (Rome II Criteria) aged between 21 and 54 years old, both with similar symptoms, and 16 of them were women who underwent? sessions of low-intensity laser distributed at random into two equal groups (Laser and Placebo), and this study characterized as a very separate clinical trial, otblind-type, randomized , placebo-controlled trial. The Placebo group performed the same treatment as the Laser group however, with the laser device off. Pain intensity was measured through visual analog scale (VAS), while the quality of life of patients after treatment was assessed by the generic instrument to assess Quality of Life in health - SF-36. The data was presented regarding? normality through the D'Agostino Test and when the distribution of a given variable was not signigicantly??different between the groups, Laser and Placebo, and statistical significance was set at p -values ? 0.05. The SF-36 was analized by its own sistem and presented with mean +SD. The Laser group patients had reduced pain significantly different (p= 0,02, n=12) after the laser therapy. The same, however, not observed for the Placebo group (p= 0,084, n= 12). For the evaluation of the SF-36 instrument on quality of life of these patients showed that the laser group showed improvements in pain category (p= 0,007), while the Placebo group showed no improvements in any way. These data suggests that the physitherapy resources cam make a positive contribution to therapy of patients with IBS and that the use of low-intensity laser(830nm) reduces symptoms of abdominal pain and disconfort of these patients , contributing to improving the quality of life? of patients with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).
