Primeros Testudinidae (Chelonia) del Vallesiense de Los Valles de Fuentidue?a (Segovia)

Abstract

[EN]Some fragments of Chelonian from the Vallesian (Upper Miocene) of Valles de Fuentidue?a, in the Segovia Province (Spain), are described in this paper. One fragment, belonging to the frontal part of a plastron, has been classified as Testudo sp. (nov. sp.?) (aff. catalaunica Bataller, 1926), because the validity of the genera Protestudo Ckhikvadze, 1970 is under discussion. The characteristic features correspond probably to a new species, but as the specimen belongs to a young tortoise -it presents hio-hipoplastral phontanella-, such classification could not be correct. Another specimen found in the same deposit shows the existence of Testudo sp. with two suprapygal plates. Some other fragments, also belonging to young individuals -they have open pleuro-peripheral phontanellas- correspond to a species next to Testudo catalaunica. In any case, the available data do not permit to affirm whether these fragments belong to the same species or not. In a different level of deposit, fragments of an adult Testudo sp. (aff. catalaunica) and of gigantic tortoises [?Geochelone bolivari (Hern?ndez Pacheco, 1917)] have been also found.
