Abstract

ABSTRACT: This article analyzes a group of popular uprisings which occurred in Rome during the rule of the emperor Constantius II. The prefects of Rome who had to deal with these uprisings were attitudes according to Ammianus Marcellinus, the late roman historian one hand, to put these seditiones into a context with an extensive tradition in Rome, namely the existence of a vindicating, defensive power which had bee exercised by the plebs of Rome since ancient imes and continued until later periods, conserving its ancestral sense of being a legitimate response to injustice. On the other hand, the article reflects on the way in which these events may have been influenced by certain factores ?such as collective fear and the inertia of tradition and custom? or certain features of Roman law and of the character of the Romans.
