En la evoluci?n del arte parietal prehist?rico se produjo una secuencia cronol?gica cuyos momentos culturales pueden cubrir todo el proceso o solamente una parte de ?l, seg?n las zonas geogr?ficas que se analicen. La Pen?nsula Ib?rica posee ejemplos desde el Paleol?tico Superior hasta la Edad del Hierro, a los que, convencionalmente, se ha bautizado con nombres de contenido est?tico, discutibles, pero imprescindibles a la hora de establecer hip?tesis; as? el arte ?naturalista? del Paleol?tico Superior, el ?impresionista? de los abrigos levantinos meso-neol?ticos, y el ?esquem?tico? del Neol?tico al bronce, sin contar con los ?petroglifos? o insculturas sobre roca y preferentemente al aire libre, de Galicia y de las Islas Canarias.
