Abstract

Un tópico ampliamente extendido considera que las calificaciones académicas miden algún tipo de dominio o maestría en la materia a que se refieren. Sin embargo, cada nuevo curso, los profesores de ciencias experimentan frecuentemente la sensación de que sus nuevos alumnos no han alcanzado los mínimos de aprendizaje correspondientes a los cursos inferiores, necesarios para progresar en la construcción de nuevo aprendizaje científico, y que incluso, alumnos con buenas calificaciones, obtenidas el curso anterior, muestran alarmantes deficiencias. Situaciones como esta, cuestionan de manera drástica el aprendizaje científico realizado en la escuela, pero también cuestionan frontalmente, la valoración de esos aprendizajes tal como la reflejan las calificaciones escolares; es decir, esta situación sugiere dos problemas diferenciados: por un lado, el tipo de aprendizaje científico que se alcanza en la escuela (¿qué aprenden realmente los alumnos?), y por otro, el grado en que las calificaciones escolares valoran adecuadamente lo que se ha aprendido (¿qué relación hay entre la calificación y el aprendizaje?).
