Abstract

Perteneciente a una familia de condici?n hidalga en la que se localizan cuatro generaciones de canteros, acabar?a avecindado en la ciudad de Salamanca, aunque su ?rea de actividad se extiende desde Galicia y ambas Castillas a Extremadura e incluso Andaluc?a. Su producci?n art?stica se encuadra en el llamado plateresco, entendido como una primera asimilaci?n del Renacimiento italiano a nivel de repertorios decorativos, que se incorporan a una arquitectura tardog?tica. ?sta se caracterizaba por interiores abovedados de rampante llano, con crucer?as estrelladas y multiplicaci?n de nervios y claves. La decoraci?n a?adida consist?a fundamentalmente en grutescos en paneles, pilastras o antepechos. A ello se un?an medallones, candeleros, balaustradas y crester?as. La actividad de Juan de ?lava supuso el triunfo del plateresco en Salamanca y su difusi?n en Galicia y Extremadura, fundamentalmente a trav?s de sus actuaciones en las catedrales de Santiago de Compostela y Plasencia y de los canteros que se formaron en sus talleres.
