Abstract

[EN] The present thesis revolves around the phenomenon of voice dysphoria, understood from the intersection of gender identity with sex assigned at birth. Voice dysphoria refers to the discomfort that people ?especially trans people? experience with their voices, when considering them inconsistent with their gender identity, which will have a negative impact on their daily life. As voice dysphoria is perceived as discomfort, it presents a subjective component, related to the affective-emotional state, which can be measured through self-reported questionnaires such as the Trans Woman Voice Questionnaire. This questionnaire was created for trans women, so in the first study of this thesis we have adapted it in order to apply it to people of all genders, without this having affected its original psychometric properties. In that study we have also found that voice dysphoria seems to be defined by the presence of anxious-depressive symptoms, a negative attitude towards oneself and some dissatisfaction with one's own voice, due to gender. Likewise, we wanted to explore whether voice dysphoria also included an objective component, related to speech parameters: that is, to investigate if voice dysphoria was linked to, or expressed in, specific voice parameters. To do this, in the second study, we have carried out a spectrographic analysis of speech, to see if such parameters differed between cis and trans people with high and low voice dysphoria. Thus, we have identified some parameters about intensity disturbance, noise in the voice signal, prosody and, to a lesser extent, frequency and intensity, which could be linked to the level of voice dysphoria. Finally, in the third study we have manipulated cognitive load through a dual task ?consisting of speaking while completing a signal detection task?and we have recorded the alterations that have occurred in the voice, as a consequence of the increase in cognitive load. The parameters that were affected in that case were related to fundamental frequency, frequency formants, intensity and its disturbance, noise in the voice signal and prosody. When comparing the second and third studies, we appreciated that the voice profile of trans people was similar to that found in the high cognitive load condition and was also similar to that of people with high voice dysphoria, with regard to the parameters of frequency, intensity and prosody, although no such similarities were found regarding the frequency disturbance and noise parameters. These findings seem to suggest that transsexuality could be associated with a greater cognitive load ?due to the continuous monitoring of their voices? and higher levels of voice dysphoria. However, the results are not conclusive across all parameters and further investigation is required.
