Abstract

Casia (ca. 810?ca. 867) es la principal poetisa medieval en lengua griega y la primera compositora musical cuyas partituras se conservan. Mujer de fuerte personalidad, particip? en el concurso de belleza para elegir a la nueva emperatriz. Sin embargo, fue rechazada cuando hizo uso de la palabra en p?blico, lo que la llev? a fundar su propio convento. Desde ?l continu? interviniendo activamente en la vida pol?tica a trav?s de la literatura. Conservamos unos 1.300 versos de Casia entre himnos lit?rgicos y epigramas profanos o sentencias. La mitad de los himnos est?n dedicados a mujeres santas o festividades de la Virgen en una exaltaci?n de lo femenino sin parang?n. En las sentencias reivindica su derecho al uso de la palabra para la denuncia social o la formaci?n del lector. Sus temas intimistas revelan una autora perspicaz, cr?tica con su entorno y con la falta de libertad para las mujeres. La solo aparente sencillez y naturalidad de su estilo, su depuraci?n formal y su subjetiva visi?n de la realidad hacen de Casia la Safo bizantina.
