The aim of this paper is to highlight the effort made by the Spanish Monarchy to conserve the fortress of Porto Longone after the Italian territories that had belonged to Spain were lost during the Spanish War of Succesion. We will analyze how the delivery of Porto Longone to the Habsbourg emperor Charles the VI was avoided and how the fortress was managed, once the war was over, to serve as a platform for future military campaigns that would allow Philip the V of Spain to return to Italy
