Abstract

The theatre of the absurd was a phenomenon that began to develop as a result of the need for the radicalisation of expressive means after the breakdown of the world order and the reign of constant doubt in the first half of the 20th century. In this way, the present work aims to approach the aesthetics of the theatre of the absurd and to observe its influence on the work of the Spanish playwright Jos? Sanchis Sinisterra. To this end, we will analyse his play El cerco de Leningrado (The Siege of Leningrad), in which we will perceive the stylistic resources typical of the phenomenon, such as the prominence of silence and the empty stage, humour and parody, puns, nonsensical gestures, new ways of communicating, etc. The importance of the role of metatheatre as a vital tool for achieving one of the main objectives of the theatre of the absurd: the distancing and rupture of Aristotelian mimesis, with the consequent awakening of the consciences of an audience that must be active during the performance. Thus, the impact of the performances of these plays was capable of creating the necessary transformation of the thoughts and emotions of spectators who were the protagonists in a world devoid of meaning.
