Abstract

La articulaci?n temporomandibular (ATM) forma parte de una unidad morfofuncional conocida como sistema estomatogn?tico (SE) y es la encargada de la masticaci?n. Son muchos los factores que pueden provocar alteraciones y disfunciones en su biomec?nica normal; algunos de ellos son los traumatismos, el estr?s, alteraciones en la oclusi?n o ciertos h?bitos como el bruxismo. Las alteraciones o disfunciones que afectan a la ATM se conocen con el nombre de trastorno temporomandibular (TTM), este concepto hace referencia a las alteraciones que ocurren en la propia articulaci?n, en la musculatura relacionada con ella y en las estructuras adyacentes. Son muy incapacitantes y afectan en gran medida a la calidad de vida de los pacientes que lo sufren. Para ofrecer un tratamiento adecuado, preciso y eficaz es necesario una valoraci?n exhaustiva, completa y detallada que permita establecer un diagn?stico exacto y preciso. Este tratamiento debe ser multidisciplinar y compete a m?dicos, ortodoncistas, psic?logos, fisioterapeutas y otros profesionales de la salud su abordaje. El tratamiento fisioter?pico es imprescindible en el tratamiento global de los TTM, siendo su principal objetivo aliviar la sintomatolog?a y mejorar la funcionalidad mediante t?cnicas de masaje, estiramiento, compresi?n, decoaptaci?n, manipulaci?n, entre otras, pudiendo destacar entre todas estas t?cnicas de fisioterapia la importancia del ejercicio terap?utico y la reeducaci?n postural.
