La dieta mediterr?nea y el deterioro cognitivo

Abstract

El deterioro cognitivo se caracteriza por una p?rdida progresiva neuronal, produci?ndose una disminuci?n de las funciones cognitivas. La Organizaci?n Mundial de la Salud (OMS) lo considera una prioridad de salud p?blica, debido a su creciente incidencia y evoluci?n. Este deterioro no tiene un tratamiento curativo y en la mayor?a de pacientes se aplica un tratamiento preventivo y no farmacol?gico. Dando gran importancia a la reducci?n de los factores de riesgo mediante una alimentaci?n saludable, ejercicio f?sico y cognitivo. El objetivo de este trabajo es determinar si el consumo de la dieta mediterr?nea (DME) en personas sanas o con deterioro cognitivo instaurado, tiene un efecto beneficioso sobre el organismo, reduciendo el riesgo de padecer esta patolog?a o retrasando su evoluci?n. Esta revisi?n bibliogr?fica ha analizado estudios en los que se valora la asociaci?n y los beneficios entre estos dos conceptos. Los art?culos analizados contaron con participantes sanos, con deterioro cognitivo y Enfermedad de Alzheimer (EA). Se seleccionaron 12 art?culos, obtenidos a trav?s de Pubmed, Google Scholar y Scopus. En los resultados se ha podido observar una reducci?n y un retraso en la aparici?n de deterioro cognitivo, demencia y EA, debido a la disminuci?n de factores de riesgo cardiovasculares y a los efectos antioxidantes y antiinflamatorios de esta dieta. A pesar de obtener resultados favorables entre el consumo de la DME y el estado cognitivo de los participantes, algunos estudios no vieron relaci?n entre ambos. Adem?s, los investigadores coindicen en la necesidad de realizar m?s estudios para comprobar su eficacia.
