Abstract

[EN] The present work focuses on the Spanish party system, which has been changing throughout the more than 40 years of Spanish democracy, until reaching now a multiparty system different from the two-party one that had been consolidated until 2015. First, we will approach the different conceptions about party systems and their typology and then we will analyze the different phases that the party system has been going through in Spain across the different electoral processes that have been taking place. To understand how the Spanish party system has changed, we will focus on the analysis of four main characteristics: political fragmentation, ideological polarization, the presence of numerous nationalist and regionalist parties, and electoral competitiveness. From this analysis we will be able to see how the current system resembles as an atomized and pluralized multiparty system in which four parties gain relevance, different from the previous one, less fragmented and with two large parties dominating the political scene.
