Abstract

El estudio completo del sistema nervioso central comprende el conocimiento de las funciones de las c?lulas gliales. Entre ellas encontramos los astrocitos, unas c?lulas imprescindibles para el funcionamiento de las neuronas. Adem?s de sus funciones conocidas cl?sicamente, como son la formaci?n de la barrera hematoencef?lica o la nutrici?n neuronal, se han descubierto otras funciones m?s relacionadas con la plasticidad neuronal y su participaci?n en patolog?as neurol?gicas. Estas funciones las llevan a cabo desde el desarrollo embrionario y se mantienen durante la vida adulta. En esta revisi?n veremos cu?les son esas funciones y la importancia de ?stas dentro de los diferentes procesos que desarrolla el sistema nervioso.
