Abstract

[EN] Social inequality is a phenomen which exists in Latin American countries. In Brazil especially, these inequalities are obvious in the big cities where illegal occupations or ?squatting? and the expansion of ?favelas? exists. In the province of Pernambuco, in the northeast of the country, the work of social movements in the illegal occupation of urban territory has been important due to the fact that they have demanded from the government the right to housing and social inclusion of the lower classes. From the year 2000, the arrival of the political left to power granted new opportunities for the political participation of the Movement of Workers without Housing of Pernambuco. This work analyses to what extent the alliance of the MTST(Spanish abbreviation) with these political powers at the local, regional and state level have changed the mobilization strategy of this movement from radical actions to institutional participation
