Because of the biopsychosocial events associated with adolescence, young people are at increased risk for engaging in risky behaviors that help them to cope with the transition into adulthood. The concept of covariation suggests that adolescents at risk for substance abuse are also at risk for unsafe sexual activity; both behaviors greatly compromise future well-being. The author examines the specific effects of various drugs on sexual behavior.
