This dissertation introduces the new switching technology Generalized Multiprotocol Label Switching (GMPLS) with traffic engineering and flash design. Initially, a brief overview of MPLS and its evolution to GMPLS is given. Next, the architecture of GMPLS and important extensions in GMPLS to MPLS is presented. In-depth coverage of the issues is then provided. Also, it demonstrates how the flash design is realized and specifies the architecture and content of the flash applications. At the end, some current outstanding issues of GMPLS are explored. Master of Science
