Review of research in manufacturing prognostics

Abstract

A prognostic is the process of predicting the future state of a system. This dissertation is aimed at tackling the current manufacturing trends on monitoring and diagnostic to achieve zero down time, also to review on various techniques used to aid the manufacturing prognostics and to find the opportunities for the future work. A literature classification scheme is suggested. A total of 174 papers from journals and international conference are classified into content and process related issues. Methodologies used in literature are categorized into conceptual, descriptive, empirical, exploratory cross-sectional and exploratory longitudinal approaches. Based on this, trend and gaps in manufacturing prognostic is explored and future research trends for automatic generation of solution are proposed.
