Abstract

Osteochondrosis is a disease of the locomotory system that affects the joints of many animals and it’s a consequence of a focal disturbance of endochondral ossification that occurs during the bone growth. It’s a dynamic disease with lesions capable of evolving or regressing spontaneously in their first months of life. The study of genetic influence is difficult, because there are phases in which the disease is subclinical. Heritability, nutrition, endocrine factors, biomechanical influences and vascularity failures play an important role in this disease. The goal of this dissertation is the radiographic study of osteochondrosis in Puro-Sangue Lusitano horses, which is the most equines breed in Portugal. This study intends to go beyond the categorization, prevalence and incidence already described in this breed. It’s also intended to study the transmission of the disease, evaluating the prevalence of the progenitors and the offspring, being the first study that is done in this race with this aim. The evaluated joints were the metacarpophalangeal, metatarsophalangeal, tarsocrural and patellofemoral joints. The results obtained indicate a prevalence of osteochondrosis of 56.5%. The most affected joints were metatarsophalangeal with 38.2%, followed by metacarpophalangeal with 33.6%. The prevalence of the disease was higher in males with 62.5% and 54.5% in females. The offspring had a prevalence of 45.2% and the parents had 71.4%. In the study of the interaction of the disease of the parents with the offspring, it was verified that wasn’t possible confirm the stallion define the manifestation of the disease (P = 1) and the mares present a significant tendency in the manifestation of the disease in their descendants. The study of the offspring according to the interaction of both parents was not conclusive, since the sample was not significant. Calculating the heritability of the breed and proceeding with the statistical analysis of the population data is the first step to be taken to improve the Lusitano Pure Blood selection program.
