Abstract

Toxoplasma gondii is an obligat intracellular protozoan with worldwide distribution. This parasite's definitive hosts are cats and other felidae but it can infect all homeothermic animals including birds and humans. The population of domestic donkey (Equus asinus) in developed countries has been declining due to the agricultural mechanization. Currently in Portugal, the donkey has economic levereg in different fields. The present study consisted in the serological screening of Toxoplasma gondii infection in donkey from Portugal using the modified agglutination test (MAT). In total, 203 animals were sampled out of which 14 (6.9%) were positive. In order to characterize the samples a survey was performed allowing the record of 18 independent variables: climate classification of the district of origin, gender, in the case of females pregnancy or not, age, breed, performance of work activites, activities in which the donkeys participated, type of housing and interation with other animal species (cats, dogs, other donkeys, horses, mules, cattle, goats, sheep, poultry, wildlife and rodents). The interaction with dogs was identified as a protective factor (p = 0.033), with 17.2% of prevalence in donkeys that didn't coexisted with dogs and 5.2% in donkeys that interact with domestic canids. The other independent variables Statistical analysis of the remaining variables revealed no significant results. Untill the redaction of this dissertation this is consider the first study on the prevalence of antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii in donkeys from Portugal. This is an extremely important work that alows us to know the prevalence of infection of this parasite in Portugal in a specie understudied in the world.
