Abstract

Communication between electronic components has always been a very important area, with a wide field of research. Through technological advances, it can be obtained components, not only with smaller sizes but also with improved capabilities. The need to communicate between these small components has become essential, so that the communication has, more and more, to be better and to provide more guarantees. This thesis presents a theoretical and practical analysis of two industrial protocols, Controller Area Network and Flex-Ray, which use such components, in other words, the microcontrollers. The work done in the scope of this thesis approaches, initially, the Controller Area Network protocol, and how it is implemented. In a second phase, the same study is conducted now related to the FlexRay protocol. Finally, the link between these two protocols is established. Subsequently, the Controller Area Network protocol is analyzed, considering the nodes and the bus, to check its functioning capabilities as an industrial protocol. Afterwards, it was designed and implemented a software capable to communicate through RS232 or USB with industrial networks that make use of this protocol. Regarding FlexRay, the integration of this protocol in the industrial universe was verified. The protocol was analyzed, along with the respective nodes, bus and types of frames used to communicate between nodes. With the two protocols studied, the ultimate purpose is the integration of this protocols into a telemetry network.
