Abstract

The hemogram is one of the most frequently solicited exams in the clinical practice. It is indicated always there is the suspect of disease, to help in the diagnosis, to monitor the evolution of disease and response to the therapy. Ideally, the hematological values should be compared with the reference values specific for each population. However, these values are characterized for few breeds of dogs. In addition to review the bibliography related to the hemograma in healthy dogs, this dissertation aimed to contribute to the characterization of the hemograma in dogs Serra da Estrela, proposing an interval of reference values for this breed. The hematological values were determined in a sample of 105 Serra da Estrela adult dogs, entire and clinically healthy, using the apparatus of the laboratory of clinical analysis and evaluation of one blood smear from each animal. It was proposed a set of hematological reference values and it was reported that for each analysed sample, the hematocrit value and the mean corpuscular volume and platelets tend to be decreased.
