Doença degenerativa da valva mitral em cães

Abstract

Myxomatous mitral valve disease is the most common acquired cardiac disease in adult dogs, representing 75% to 80% of cardiac diseases. Its prevalence increases with age and it’s more common in small breed dogs. Chest radiography and echocardiography are crucial complementary exams to diagnose. The treatment is usually palliative, which means that it’s made to improve life quality. So, the objective of this work is to follow the clinical procedures and complementary diagnostic exams of dogs with the disease, to be able to interpret every case and compare with bibliography. In this work, five clinical cases were followed. Three of those where accompanied at Hospital Veterinário do Baixo Vouga, in Águeda, and the other two at the department of Cardiologia Veterinária Móvel with Dra. Cláudia Abreu, in Porto. In this work, despite the small number of animals, it was verified that all cases referred to small dogs and three were males. The clinical presentations varied depending on the stage of the disease. However, in general, cough and left systolic murmur were present. Cardiomegaly was the most frequent radiographic sign and, on echocardiography, mitral regurgitation and valve injury were constant alterations. The treatment was consistent with American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of canine chronic valvular heart disease. In conclusion, the clinical presentation and the changes observed on complementary diagnostic exams described in bibliography, were identified in this work.
