Abstract

Bovine tuberculosis is an infectious disease that affects mainly cattle but also other domestic and sylvatic species, and own Man. Therefore, it constitutes a problem for the veterinary health authorities in consequence of its zoonotic potential, economic impact and obstacles caused by the movement of animals and products. Portugal is currently in a stage of pre-eradication of the disease, with efforts aimed at this goal involving high costs for the state and producers. The present work performed a retrospective study of tuberculosis in cattle cases, between 2005 and 2012, and a search for damages of this disease in big game species, both in the Estremoz region. It was studied, in a deeper way, an outbreak of bovine tuberculosis, in which there was recurrence of the disease in the last three years, and it was tried to assess what were the main risk factors that caused this disease, which led it to perpetuate in the farm. A hunt was followed up, in the focus region of the studied bovine tuberculosis, and it was not possible to identify gross damages compatible with this disease. Although the results doesn´t confirm the existence of tuberculosis in deer and free-living wild boar, the contact with domestic cattle in certain regions is a reality, and disease transmission between species is a possibility. It is necessary to clarify the role of sylvatic species as reservoir hosts or accidental hosts of tuberculosis in order to improve sylvatic wildlife management and cinegetic resources. It is recommended the continued health surveillance of these species, integrating good health practices and medical care in the veterinary inspection procedures of hunting parts. Preventive measures should also be implemented such as the existence of game species management plans that would address the control of the population size and greater confinement of cattle in risk areas. Bovine tuberculosis is an emerging problem in our country and the competent authorities, veterinarians, farmers and hunters should, join forces in the fight to eradicate the disease, not to mention the risk of sylvatic species being involved in its transmission.
