Competências pessoais como preditoras do desempenho docente

Abstract

This study stands on the professional competences required to the teachers towards the new and incessant challenges that the society now demands. The sampling is convenient and it comprehends 88 teachers of a group of schools in the district of Viseu. Teachers present high levels of personal and professional competences, of cooperation, self- esteem and of social support, and a satisfactory level in the field of assertiveness and empathy. In general, women were more cooperative and assertive. The surveyed teachers showed a profile of very good performance in the professional, social and ethical aspect, as well as in the development of long-life learning and teaching. They showed a good performance mainly what concerns their participation in the school activities and in the community relationships. The oldest teachers exhibited a more positive opinion about their own professional performance profile. Most teachers revealed some level of stress in their school life. Teachers with better mental health are more cooperative and professionally accomplished. There is evidence that the teachers’ personal characteristics contribute to enhance the development of their profession.
