Causas de (in)sucesso escolar

Abstract

O drama do insucesso escolar é relativamente recente.

The drama of academic failure is fairly recent. It is after the 1960’s that we can find its first manifestations. From that moment onwards schools began to being demanded that they should find ways of ensuring academic success for all its students, because of economical and egalitarian reasons. What was once regarded from the individual’s point of view suddenly became an unbearable social problem. The responsibility for academic failure began being seen as a failure of the school community and everyone involved in the learning-teaching process. The system was not capable of motivating the students and ensuring their success. The challenge became overwhelming as every individual cases turned into social problems. It is mainly because of this reason that the main educational problem today is that of identifying and listing the manifestations and causes of academic failure, which keep on increasing as more studies are developed.Consequently, this paper tried to understand the students’ perspective and their opinions regarding the problem of academic failure. Throughout the paper one can come to the conclusion that students ascribe several responsibilities to parents and teachers. This may be a reflection of society, given the fact that people’s and especially children’s improper behavior is not frowned upon.
