Causas de (in) sucesso escolar

Abstract

The study presented in this thesis focuses on student failure, an issue with great social importance. Although this subject has been extensively studied over the last decades, it can not be considered a worn-out issue. Thus, the study was intended to: clarify and deepen the concept of success and failure in schools, analyzing it according to different periods and authors, identify the players and enhancing one of them (the students) with the purpose of finding solutions for a better future in education. To achieve the established objectives, the work was structured on three fundamental parts. The first part consisted of theme definition, its evolution and player identification. In the second part of the study, research results covering twenty eight students from eighth schooling grades was presented in order to find the main factors of success and failure of those students. For this research, inquiries were used to address the causes of success and abandonment factors of a student community from a school in the Vila Real town centre. Several reasons were enumerated by the students involved, namely: family, school, individual organization and motivation. Finally, in the third part of the project, the students’ opinions were evidenced and suggestions for improvement of school success were presented.
