Displasia do cotovelo em cães - Opções terapêuticas atuais

Abstract

Through the years, the elbow dysplasia syndrome has been investigated. Although uncountable findings were confirmed, the interest of the scientific community for this group of elbow diseases is increasing. Juvenile, medium to large breed dogs with forelimb lameness can be affected by one or more of these diseases within the elbow dysplasia syndrome: elbow incongruity, ununited anconeal process, disease of the medial coronoid process and osteochondritis dissecans of the medial humeral condyle. The etiopathology, heritability and the diagnostic tools enlightenment allowed establishing guidelines in order to prevent elbow dysplasia in dogs. Despite all the efforts to find the successful treatment, every one of these diseases will result in osteoarthritis and a poorer quality of life. However, the decreased number of cases with elbow dysplasia may reflect the success of preventive measures.
