Estilos educativos parentais, rendimento académico, consumo de álcool e tabaco

Abstract

The purpose of the present study was conducted with the assumption to establish the relationship between the academic performance (school failure) and legal consumption of toxic substances (alcohol and tobacco) in teenagers in the level of parental educational styles. We performed several comparisons (MANOVAS) with the independent variables (gender, school failure, alcohol and tobacco) and the dependent variables (paternal acceptance, acceptance maternal, paternal and maternal knowledge). The research sample consisted in 236 adolescents, 98 males (41.5%) and 138 females (58.5%). The same was collected in four schools in the Northern Interior of Portugal, with teenagers aged between 16 and 20 years old of both sexes (M = 2.39, SD = .79). The sample was conducted by applying an instrument. This consisted in social demographic questions, by Parental Education Styles Questionnaire (QEEP), and related issues academic performance (school failure) and consumption of toxic substances. This instrument aims to analyze the four parental styles through the educational dimensions. The results were discussed based on the dimensions of QEEP, assuming the lack of the statistically significant differences in the variables that were studied at the educational level of parental styles. Simultaneously, it was concluded that the father figure proved stronger acceptance and knowledge on school failure of teens as the basis of the variable sex. Besides, it was found that the maternal figure showed more acceptance and knowledge face to alcohol consumption of adolescents regarding the sex of teenagers. However, in tobacco, the maternal figure showed more acceptance, while the father figure showed more knowledge. It appears that the mother figure has also showed more acceptance and understanding than the father figure on school failure and alcohol. In tobacco is observed that paternal figure has more acceptance and maternal figure more knowledge relative to school failure. It was also found that the father figure has a lower acceptance and knowledge relative to alcohol and tobacco in teenagers.
