Abstract

Over the years, the most beautiful constructions suffer the action of time and begin to show subtle or deep marks. In current buildings, constructions elements are affected by a variety of external agents, such as funghi, the reactive atmosphere, climate changes and the action of man. The most commum pathologies on walls are cracks and the defects associated to the action of dampness. However, most of the pathologies would be avoided if the building envolope was waterproof and permeable to water vapor. The aims of this work is to study the behaviour towards waterproofing of external coatings, using traditional and pre-dosed mortar. In order to compare these two types of waterproof mortars (traditional and pre-dosed) some samples have been tested to bending, compression and capillary. The analysis of the results showed that the samples obtained with traditional mortars, made with SikaCim water repellents, presented better results in all tests. However, it is important to refer that the results of the mechanic, tests using pre-dosed mortar, were in accordance to the specifications presented in the data sheets of the manufacturer.
