O insucesso e abandono escolares tomaram-se um problema dos actuais sistemas de ensino. Não sendo novo, ele requer hoje uma reavaliação, devido às mudanças profundas que as sociedades têm vindo a registar, quer na socialização dos jovens quer nas exigências que estas fazem. Embora a escola afirme como igual para todos, ela constitui-se como obstáculo para muitos alunos. O desempenho escolar muitas vezes não é o desejado pelos pais, pelos professores e, também, pelos alunos. Desde a entrada de Portugal na União Europeia que se procura combater o problema através de reformas e medidas diversas implementadas pelos sucessivos governos, na tentativa de minimizar um pouco a sua dimensão. Mas o insucesso e o abandono escolar continuam a persistir, para desespero de educadores e pais, que vêem Portugal na cauda da União Europeia no que respeita a este fenómeno. A nossa questão é o que mais poderemos fazer para tentar colmatar tão grave problema. A análise dos motivos que levam os jovens a abandonar a escola constitui, assim, o principal objectivo deste trabalho e assenta num modelo complexo que procura relacionar entre si as variáveis Escola, Família, Mercado de Trabalho, etc…, todas elas concorrentes na determinação do fenómeno. Neste enquadramento encontramos o fundamento do nosso estudo e tentamos perceber os factores que diferenciam estes dois grupos de jovens; uns que abandonam a escola e outros que nela continuam com sucesso. Tentaremos, pois, identificar causas e estruturas que fomentam o insucesso e abandono escolar, procurando buscar soluções sempre que possível.

The failure and dropping out of school they have become a problem of current systems of education. Not new, it now requires a revaluation, due to the profound changes that societies have been registered, in the socialization of young people and the demands they make. Although the school claims to be equal for all, it constitutes an obstacle for many students. The academic performance often is not desired by parents, by teachers and also by students. Since our entry into the life that we could see more clearly the backwardness of education, although not recognize task of easy solution. When I checked the constant interruptions that the studies suffer from many young people, have we far will our guilt in this, and what more can we do to try to overcome such problem. The analysis of the reasons that lead young people to leave school is, so, the main objective of this work and determines a complex model that attempts to relate among themselves the variables School, Family, Labour Market, etc…, all of them competing in the determination of the phenomenon. This framework is the basis of our study and try to understand the factors that differentiate these two groups of young people, some who leave the school and others who continue successfully. We therefore identify causes and structures that promote the failure and school dropout, seeking solutions wherever possible.
