Abstract

Paratuberculosis, or Johne's disease, is a chronic granulomatous enteritis caused by an agent called Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (Map), affecting mainly most species of domestic and wild ruminants. This disease manifests itself with a progressive and fatal weight loss of animals, associated with a decrease in milk production, carcass value and premature slaughter, representing high economic losses for the livestock industry. This dissertation focused on the study and identification of risk factors for paratuberculosis, associated with sheep, in farms in the region of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro. The identification of risk factors was done through a survey, in total, about 76 surveys were conducted to the people in charge of the farms. The survey aimed to collect information about the general characteristics of the herds, characteristics of the farms, management practices and hygiene and health of the same. In this study, most of the farms with clinical suspicion were cross-breed (59.4%). This difference was statistically significant (p = 0.017). Parturient sheep had udders stained with feces in 34.4% of suspected farms (p <0.001). In 37.5% of suspected farms, most animals had dirty tails (p = 0.032). According to the results of this study, it was possible to identify several risk factors associated with the transmission of paratuberculosis. It will be necessary to increase public awareness about this problem, implementing effective measures to control the disease.
