Mastocitoma no cão: apresentação de casos clínicos

Abstract

Mastocytoma is a neoplasm that originates in mast cells, immune cells produced in the bone marrow that are present throughout the body as part of the immune system and the normal allergic response. Mastocytoma usually appears on the skin (accounting for around 16 to 21% of canine skin tumors), or internally, for example in the liver or spleen. Mastocytoma in dogs is mostly of unknown etiology, and is theoretically associated with chronic inflammation or exposure to skin irritants. The most commonly used diagnostic method in clinical practice is cytology, which is a simple analysis and the result is obtained within 24 hours. However, histopathological evaluation is of great importance in classifying the histological grade, allowing it to be classified into grades I, II and III depending on its degree and invasion of surrounding tissue. Although there are a number of therapeutic options, the most common choices are surgery and chemotherapy. The aim of this dissertation was to present documented clinical cases of mastocytomas in dogs. To this end, 7 clinical cases consulted at the Hospital Veterinário Baixo Vouga were studied, addressing different diagnostic and treatment modalities. All the cases studied were diagnosed by cytology and histopathological analysis. Surgical excision was the most commonly used treatment, with the exception of one case where this was not possible.
