Abstract

The present dissertation intends to study the impact of spirituality, emotional intelligence and knowledge on the preparation and ability to provide end-of-life care (ELC) of doctors and nurses. The general objectives of this study are centered on two axes: the first refers to the influence that spirituality, emotional intelligence and knowledge exert on self-efficacy and attitudes, by health professionals towards an end-of-life patient. The second axis concerns the investigation of the possible relationship between spirituality, emotional intelligence and knowledge with the preparation and ability to provide ELC. Decisions about ELC can be complex and challenging for the healthcare professionals involved. Despite evidence that the provision of ELC is influenced by several factors, there is limited empirical evidence on the values and experiences of these professionals in providing ELC, and most of the available evidence is based on qualitative studies. Having a greater understanding of the values, experiences, knowledge and preparation of health professionals during the provision of ELC, using a quantitative approach, can culminate in future multidisciplinary strategies of emotional, communicational and instrumental support, including education programs aimed at facilitating best practices in end-of-life scenarios. The study carried out was based on a quantitative approach based on the application of a questionnaire to doctors and nurses at a hospital in the northern region of Portugal. For the treatment and analysis of the collected data, the SPSS software and the AMOS program were used. The results indicate that self-efficacy, spirituality and palliative care (PC) knowledge positively influence the ability to provide ELC. Spirituality and two of the dimensions of emotional intelligence directly and positively affect self-efficacy. There is no direct influence of emotional intelligence on the ability to provide ELC. However, emotional intelligence has an indirect effect, mediated by selfefficacy, on the ability to provide ELC. Attitudes towards ELC were eliminated from the model as they did not meet the validity criteria. Thus, this study aims to contribute to the advancement of research on the provision of PC and ELC, through statistical data and consequent conclusions, as relevant and concise results related to this theme are scarce.
