Abstract

Calves’ rearing is an important and decisive moment for their adult life, therefore proper management and prevention of infectious diseases should not be forget. A good rearing means investing in the present to profit in the future. The present dissertation was divided in two main topics. The first was to evaluate the colostrum quality and the transfer of passive immunity and the second neonatal diarrhea. For that, colostrum and blood samples were collected from 65 calves, from 6 farms in Terceira Island. Colostrum quality was assessed through the percentage of total solids, determined using a digital Brix refractometer. Transfer of passive immunity was evaluated through total serum protein content, determined using an optical refractometer. It was concluded that the timing of colostrum milking influenced its quality (p=0,027). Moreover, the amount of colostrum fed (p=0,005), the feeding route (p=0,013), the cleaning and sterilization of the materials used (p<0,001), as well as the management of the farms (p=0,002) influenced the transfer of passive immunity from cows to calves. The second topic aimed to identifying the main infectious agents involved in neonatal diarrhea and to relate it with the variables studied in the first topic, colostrum management and transfer of passive immunity. Infectious agents were identified in laboratory, from faeces’ samples collected from the same calves. Escherichia coli was determined as the predominant pathogenic agent. It was also concluded that none of the variables studied on the first topic, influenced the presence of calves’ diarrhea. The results obtained in this work show that there is a need to stimulate the farmers to learn more about their management techniques, with the goal of contributing to an overall wellbeing of the animals and health of the new-born calves, since the rearing period is crucial for the farms’ future.
