A Identidade Cultural Europeia

A Identidade Cultural Europeia

Abstract

Over the last decades, but especially in the last two, we have seen the interest of Europeans, for the concept of identity. A significant part of this interest concerns the challenges posed by an increasingly global world, as well as the flow of individuals from outside Europe that reaches it in numbers never before known. Moved by the most diverse motives, immigrants who seek Europe represent a challenge for those who live in it. The integration of immigrant communities into a host society always presents a series of challenges for European society. Different ways of being, thinking, communicating, arrive in Europe and shake the cultural structure of the continent. Globalization has imported new habits, new cultural forms that are visible throughout the European territory. The paradigm by which Europe rules is called into question by the coming of different cultures. The fear of the standard imbalance that was the norm is notorious. As such, Europe is experiencing a unique moment in its history with the existence of the European Union which brings together virtually all the countries of Europe. New challenges require new approaches and it is by looking back at the past that one can understand the present and outline strategies for the future. The goal of this work was to verify if European cultural identity exists, in what form and in what it consists, as well as what the elites and Europeans think about its existence and, if it exists, about what it means to be an European.
