La obra de la artista alemana Käthte Kollwitz es abordada aquí como el testimonio expresivo de las circunstancias personales y sociales de su particular existencia, de modo que difícilmente puede entroncarse en el marco de una arte feminista o de mujeres, sino que, entendido el arte como compromiso social, se convierte en denuncia visual del horror ante la violencia y del sufrimiento ocasionado por la guerra pero también en expresión de la experiencia personal del dolor de una madre a quien sucesivas confrontaciones bélicas privaron de un hijo y un nieto.
